THESE ARE THE QUESTIONS I ASKED THAT GOT ME HERE:
spoke + heart press fills the narrative gap left by a Chick Lit market saturated in desperate love stories. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good Hallmark-y tale of romance just as much as the next gal. It’s just that I also believe there are many more interesting stories to tell.
I write about women starting businesses and succeeding on their own terms. I write about women failing, again, on their own terms. I write about women challenging themselves physically, mentally, and emotionally. I write about women who move to tropical islands and just live there, happily, blissfully single.
Society tells us being single is wrong. Single women on their own are lacking _______ (you can fill in the blank with just about anything).
If we want a new narrative to be spoken about us, then we need to write it ourselves. The people who read my novels are seeking something they’re not finding elsewhere: stories focused on strong independent women unapologetically enjoying their lives outside of the standard narrative of desperate romance.
The message is simple: Being single is normal, valid, and interesting.
The principle value conveyed is: Believe in your ability to find happiness along the unconventional path regardless of how often you are judged for it.
The emotions triggered are delightful: Sanity, confidence, relaxation, joy, community, acceptance, and a breath of fresh air.
